First Day in Phuket
Settle into Phuket after HKT — transfer timing, SIM and cash, beach vs Patong pace, and what to save for day two.

Phuket is bigger than people expect
Phuket looks small on a map, but it is Thailand's largest island, and the roads between beaches are winding and often slow. The airport (HKT) is in the far north. Most visitors stay on the west coast, at beaches like Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala or Rawai, and getting there takes a while. Knowing that changes how you plan the first day.
From HKT to your hotel
The airport is near Mai Khao and Nai Yang beaches. From there, journeys to the main resort areas are long, and travel times rise in the afternoon and on busy roads around Patong.
Your options:
- A pre-booked transfer with a driver who tracks your flight. With bags after a long trip, this is the easiest. Common routes: Phuket Airport to Patong, to Kata, to Karon, to Kamala, to Rawai, to Panwa and the closer Nai Yang and Mai Khao
- Airport taxi counters with fixed fares
- Ride-hail apps, with pickup from the designated area
- The airport bus to Phuket Town and some beaches, cheap but slow and with limited stops
Some visitors fly into Phuket but stay elsewhere. We also run HKT to Khao Lak and HKT to Ao Nang in Krabi.

Which part of Phuket are you in?
Your first day depends on where you are staying.
- Patong: busy, lively, full of restaurants, bars and shops. Bangla Road at night. Beach can be crowded
- Kata and Karon: more relaxed, family friendly, good beaches
- Kamala and Surin: quieter, more upmarket
- Rawai and Nai Harn: the south, near Promthep Cape, laid back
- Phuket Town: no beach, but old Sino-Portuguese streets, cafés and good local food
- Mai Khao and Nai Yang: near the airport, quiet, long beaches
The first afternoon
- Check in, drink water, shower
- If you need data, see the Thailand SIM and eSIM guide
- Go to the beach nearest your hotel. Check the flags before swimming. Red flags mean no swimming, and rip currents are a real risk on the west coast during the wet season
- Watch the sunset. West coast beaches face the right way
- Dinner nearby
Money
ATMs are everywhere, with a fixed fee for foreign cards. Cards work in hotels, bigger restaurants and attractions. Beach chairs, street food, markets and small shops prefer cash. Taxis in Phuket are expensive by Thai standards and often prefer cash.
Getting around the island
There is no metro or skytrain. Options:
- Ride-hail apps, which are usually the most predictable
- Taxis and tuk-tuks, where prices are agreed before you get in and are often high
- Scooter hire, which is popular but risky. You need a valid licence with the right motorcycle category, and insurance often does not cover you without one
- A driver for the day, or organised tours with hotel pickup
For seeing the island in one go, the Phuket city tour covers Big Buddha, Wat Chalong and Phuket Old Town with hotel transfers.
What to save for day two and later
Island boat trips
These start early, often with a 7 or 8 am hotel pickup, and are long days in the sun. Do them after a full night's sleep.
- Phi Phi island tour by big boat, steadier in swell
- Phi Phi and Maya Beach by speedboat, faster and bumpier
- Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, with calmer water
- The Phuket to Phi Phi ferry ticket if you want to stay on Phi Phi
Read Thailand island hopping basics first. In the wet season, also read Thailand monsoon and outdoor tours.
Shows and evenings
- Phuket FantaSea, a large cultural theme show in Kamala
- Simon Cabaret in Patong
Adventure and family days
- Hanuman World zip line
- Aquaria Phuket, an aquarium good on a rainy day
- Splash Jungle Water Park
- Andamanda water park
See everything on the Phuket page.
Common first-day mistakes
- Booking an island tour for the morning after a long-haul arrival
- Underestimating travel time between beaches
- Swimming when red flags are up
- Renting a scooter without a licence or helmet
- Getting sunburnt on the first afternoon, which ruins the next few days
FAQ
How long from HKT to Patong?
It depends on traffic. Expect it to take a fair while, more in the late afternoon. The transport guide has more detail.
Is Phuket good in the wet season?
It can be. Seas are rougher on the west coast, so boat trips can change. Hotels are often cheaper, and there are fewer crowds.
Do I need to book tours in advance?
For popular boat trips in high season, it is safer. Product pages list inclusions and cancellation cut-offs.
