First Day in Delhi: Airport to Hotel, SIM, Money & Pace
Settle into Delhi after landing — airport pickup, SIM/money basics, traffic timing, and a gentle first-day pace.
What day one in Delhi is for
The first day in Delhi is about getting set up: arriving at your hotel without hassle, getting a working phone, having some cash and a payment method, and eating something good. The sightseeing can wait until tomorrow. Delhi is big, traffic is unpredictable, and jet lag hits hard in the afternoon heat.
From the airport to your hotel
Most international flights arrive at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport. After immigration and baggage, you walk out into the arrivals area where drivers wait with name boards.
Your options:
- Pre-booked transfer with a driver who tracks your flight. This is what we would choose for a first visit, a late-night arrival or anyone with heavy bags. Book Delhi Airport T3 to Delhi NCR, or for offices and hotels in Gurugram, the Delhi Airport to Gurugram transfer
- Prepaid taxi counters inside the terminal, where you pay a fixed fare before leaving
- App-based cabs, picked up from the marked zone
- The Airport Express metro line from T3 into central Delhi, good if you are light and staying near a connecting station
Avoid anyone who approaches you inside the hall offering a cab. Use counters, apps, or a driver who knows your name and booking.
If your driver is not where the voucher says, call the number on your voucher or contact support with your Booking ID. Most mix-ups are about which pillar or gate.
Our full Delhi airport pickup and drop guide covers terminals and timing for the return trip.
Phone and data
You will want data for maps, cab apps, WhatsApp and payments. Choices:
- An eSIM from an international provider, installed before you fly
- A local SIM from a provider counter at the airport or a store in the city. You will need your passport and visa, and possibly a photo. Activation is not always instant
- International roaming on your home plan, which is simple but often expensive
Our India SIM, eSIM and UPI guide explains each in more detail.
Money
ATMs are in the arrivals area and all over the city. Take out a sensible amount of cash for the first few days. You will need it for small shops, autos, tips and street food.
Cards work in hotels, malls, chain restaurants and most ticketed monuments. Many small businesses use UPI QR codes. Foreign visitors can use UPI through specific wallet arrangements, but it is not as simple as for residents. Assume cash for small things until you have that set up.
Getting your bearings
Delhi is not one compact centre. Areas visitors commonly stay in include Connaught Place, Paharganj near New Delhi station, Karol Bagh, South Delhi neighbourhoods like Hauz Khas, and Aerocity near the airport. Distances between them are bigger than they look on a map, and traffic changes travel time more than distance.
Rough rules:
- Morning and evening rush hours are slow on the main roads
- The metro is often faster than a cab across the city at peak times. See Delhi Metro getting around
- Save your hotel location in your map app offline before you leave Wi-Fi
A gentle first day
If you land in the morning:
- Check in, or leave bags if the room is not ready
- Shower and eat something light
- Sleep for no more than two hours
- Take a short walk nearby or go to one easy place, like a park or a market close to your hotel
- Early dinner, early night
If you land late at night, sleep, then follow the same pattern the next morning.
What we would not do on day one: a full city tour, a same-day trip to Agra, or a crowded market in the evening rush on no sleep.
Planning the next days
Once rested, a good way to see the main sights without fighting the metro map is a full day Delhi sightseeing car with driver. You set the pace and the driver handles parking.
Agra is the next question for most visitors. The same-day Delhi to Agra round trip is a long day but works for people short on time. If you can spare a night, the overnight Delhi, Agra and Fatehpur Sikri trip is more relaxed and gives you a sunrise option at the Taj Mahal. With four or five days, the 3 nights 4 days Golden Triangle tour adds Jaipur.
Heading north instead? We also run cars from Delhi to Amritsar, Dehradun, Chandigarh and Jim Corbett.
Food on day one
Stick to busy places with high turnover. Drink bottled or filtered water, and be cautious with raw salads and cut fruit from street stalls until your stomach adjusts. Delhi's food is one of the best reasons to visit, so it is worth easing into rather than skipping.
Practical notes
- India runs on IST (UTC+5<30></30>). Your voucher times are in IST
- Plugs are mainly types C, D and M at 230V. Bring a universal adapter
- Dress modestly for religious sites. See India temple etiquette
- Winter mornings from roughly December to February can bring fog that delays flights and road trips. Build in buffer
FAQ
Is it safe to take a cab from the airport at night?
Use a pre-booked transfer, a prepaid counter or an app. Share your trip with someone and keep your phone charged.
How long does it take to get from the airport to central Delhi?
It depends heavily on time of day and traffic. Off-peak is much quicker than rush hour. Ask your hotel for a realistic estimate for your arrival time.
Should I visit Agra on day two?
Only if you slept well. It is a long road day either way.
Do I need cash right away?
Some. Card coverage is good in hotels and malls, but small vendors and autos prefer cash.
